What Verizon iPhone means to iOS App Developers

The launch of the iPhone on the Verizon network has huge implications for App developers.

Consider the following numbers

iPhone sales estimates for Verizon range from 11-25 million units
Studies indicate that 40% of Blackberry users would switch to an iPhone. This is made easier now that the iPhone is available on what is perceived to be a faster, more reliable network.
Among the 700-plus smartphone users surveyed, 54 percent of Verizon's current Android and BlackBerry users say they're very or somewhat likely to switch to the Verizon iPhone as soon as it hits the stores.

Even if you take the most conservative numbers presented above, the number of iPhone users is getting ready to explode. Now consider that the average iPhone owner spends $80 on apps and you can see that the app market is going to get a lot bigger very soon.

More evidence that people are continuing to increase their Net consumption via mobile devices from Fortune.com :

The most striking is the growth of Apple's iOS -- the operating system that drives the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It now accounts for 1.36% of global Internet traffic according to NetApplications, up .93 points (216%) year over year.

This is a train that is just leaving the station.

Great post on MarketWatch making the point that Apps are here to stay and will quickly surpass the browser as the way we distribute content.

Question Still Surround iPad Launch

Analyst are anticipating unit sales of 6 million in calendar 2010, considerably higher than the Street's consensus of 3-4 million. Clearly there is demand for something beyond the netbook.

With the rumored pre-sale of the iPad not happening last week, there remains a lot of mystery surrounding the device's launch time-frame and what exactly will the final feature set will be.

What can the iPad do?

"The iPad is nothing more than a big iTouch." "It does nothing that a netbook can't do".

These are some of the more common statements that I have heard since the iPad debuted. While it's true that out of the box, the iPad varies little from the iTouch, that view is short-sighted.

Look at the iPhone or iTouch, out of the box they both play songs, surf the web and check email. But start adding apps and the whole equation shifts to what can't these devices do.

The iPad is the same way. Out of the box it seems limited, but I feel it has greater business applications in that it's screen size opens it up to a host of applications that are ill-suited to it's smaller brethren. When you consider the apps that can be delivered via the iPad, the view of the iPad is transformed from neat toy to virtually anything you want it to be.
